There has been a new addition to my family of one. A tiny rescued beagle with a big heart. Madeline.
She appears to have been abused by her previous owners - she flinches at noises, and ducks when we try to pet her as if anticipating a strike. She hid a lot when I first brought her home, but gradually she has started to understand that this is a safe place. Every day brings a new discovery - the day that she discovered the big soft doggy bed by my bed (which belongs to my Sophie, who is going to be soooo jealous when she meets Maddy), I found her curled up in tight little ball at corner of the bed. Delighted, I went over to fuss over her but she scampered off at a dead run with her tail between her legs, as if I had caught her doing something bad. The poor girl has probably never been allowed nice things before. I also often find her playing with her toys or her treats, but always out of sight. In the next room, under the table, and so on… If she sees me peeking in on her playing, she stops immediately and looks abashed. My darling. I am going to spoil her SICK.
She has been wagging her tail more and more lately, and she goes nuts when I get her leash out for walks. I am heartened to see her so happy.
Taking a picture of has proven challenging however. I have a hundred pictures that look like this:
And one clear shot:
Oops, she blinked! How very human
